Ocala,FL,USA -The Ocala by Joe Callahan -August 6, 2009: -- A Web-based cargo theft reporting system, described as an Internet 911 system of sorts, is planned to launch today to help agencies around the country quickly catch cargo thieves... For years, reporting stolen 18-wheelers and trailers had taken so much time that cargo sometimes had been shipped out of the country before anyone knew what happened... Cargo theft has been identified as one of the most costly crimes in the United States, with annual losses topping at least $10 billion... The new system provides a victim - whether a driver, representative of a trucking company or its insurance carrier - with immediate contact information, including cargo theft investigators around the country... A thief can travel one mile every minute after a theft... "Quick reporting is the key," said Marion sheriff's Capt., Tommy Bibb, chairman of the state's cargo theft task force... A long-awaited national uniform crime reporting system will be unveiled later this year at the National Cargo Theft Summit in Arlington, Va....
