Traffic-Enforcement Campaigns * USA - Troopers cracking down on drivers cutting off trucks
Grays Harbor County,WASH,USA -Komo News, by Keith Eldridge -Jul 13, 2009: -- Bob Fuller is off his normal truck route today. Instead, he's working as a decoy for the Washington State Patrol... Trooper, Tom Nickelson, is right behind him in an unmarked patrol car, ready to catch drivers who cut too close in front of Fuller's truck... When drivers change lanes directly in front of a large truck, Nickelson said, the driver can't stop in an emergency... The patrols marked the start of a two-week emphasis along Highway 8 and 12 between Olympia and the ocean beaches... It's an $800,000 effort is supported by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Alliance... The government-industry alliance realizes there would be more infractions on interstates that run through the big cities, but wanted the emphasis to be out on the rural highways just to see what was happening out here... A big semi truck can weigh over 80,000 pounds, and making a driving mistake in front of them can be deadly... During our ride along on Monday, a slow-moving driver had his signal on and cut from the far right lane to get to an exit on the left, forcing Fuller to brake and swerve...
