Tokyo,Japan -Bloomberg, by Kiyori Ueno & Alan Ohnsman -July 10, 2009: -- Suzuki Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., suffering from plunging U.S. sales and excess North American plant capacity, may have to quit the market after a quarter century... Suzuki, Japan’s fourth-largest carmaker, reported a 78 percent drop in unit sales in June, pushing its first-half decline to 60 percent, the market’s worst. Mitsubishi is down 51 percent this year, and is stuck in a slump that began in 2003... Recession, joblessness and weak consumer confidence pushed U.S. auto sales to the lowest since 1976, bringing bankruptcies for General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC and a record loss at Toyota Motor Corp. Truckmaker Isuzu Motors Ltd., which halted U.S. consumer sales in January, is the only Japanese brand less familiar to carbuyers than Suzuki or Mitsubishi, according to industry analyst Alexander Edwards...


* South Africa - Banking group dissolves funding alliance with truck maker

Cape Town,SA -Engineering News, by Irma Venter -10 July 2009: -- Truck manufacturer Nissan Diesel South Africa (NDSA) and Absa have dissolved their financing alliance, says NDSA marketing services manager Raymond Schulz... The alliance has been experiencing problems since February, when Absa informed NDSA of its intent to break off the financing agreement. However, this was followed by a fresh round of negotiations, which finally deadlocked in May... The break-up comes as South African banks have pulled back sharply from the automotive market, with roughly only one in four potential vehicle buyers receiving credit to buy a new vehicle... * USA - Mack hopes to keep NYC garbage trucks rolling - Allentown truckmaker faces competition for hybrid vehicle contract

New York,NY,USA -The Morning Call, by Tyrone Richardson -July 10, 2009: -- New York City's garbage trucks eat a lot of gas of while picking up trash from the city's busy streets -- and in turn -- release a lot of carbon dioxide and monoxide into the environment through tailpipe emissions... The New York City Department of Sanitation is vowing to curb some of those costs, while at the same time showing a green thumb by using vehicles that emit fewer harmful gases... For more than a decade, Mack Trucks has been the city's primary supplier of garbage trucks... But now, the Allentown truckmaker will go head-to-head in competition with Oklahoma-based truckmaker Crane Carrier in a yearlong trial to find out which company's hybrid garbage truck works best in real-life city situations... Mack supplies about 300 garbage trucks to the city each year, according to Rocco DiRico, the city's deputy commissioner of the Bureau of Support Services...
