"GREEN" NEWS * USA - Postal Service adds fuel-efficient vehicles to fleet

The U.S. Postal Service is getting greener

FL,USA -The South Florida Business Journal -9 July 2009: -- It said on Thursday that it will replace 6,500 of its vehicles with 1,000 E-85 ethanol capable and 900 gasoline/hybrid vehicles, compliments of the U.S. General Services Administration... The 1,900 vehicles from GSA will bring the total number of alternative fuel-capable vehicles in the Postal Service fleet to more than 43,000... At nearly 220,000 vehicles, the Postal Service operates and maintains the largest civilian fleet in the country...

* Stimulus bucks may get West Coast ports new trucks

CAL,USA -Fleet Oweer, by Wendy Leavitt -Jul 10, 2009: -- If federal stimulus funding comes through, trucks at selected West Coast ports may become cleaner still, according to Cascade Sierra Solutions, a non-profit that plans to work with such partners as the Washington State Dept. of Ecology; Washington’s Ports of Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia, and the Portland, OR port to replace the oldest trucks serving the seaports with newer, cleaner vehicles... According to Sandor Lau, development director for Cascade Sierra Solutions, which seeks to reduce fuel consumption and curb emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks via idle-reduction equipment and other efficiency-enhancing components, a retrofit program called “Bridge to a Better Future” is ready to roll later this year-- if federal funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) comes through... The Bridge to a Better Future program aims to replace approximately 500 of the oldest trucks hauling in and out of some West Coast ports with trucks that are model year 2003 or newer by providing truck operators with ultra-low cost vehicle leases—leases that have monthly payments of just $450... What’s more, $100 of each payment would go into a special savings account to create a fund for use toward the purchase of a new or cleaner used truck at the end of the six to seven year lease period...

* EPA Targets Nitrogen Dioxide Emissions Near Freeways

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -The Los Angeles Times, by Amy Littlefield -3 June 2009: -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed stronger limits on nitrogen dioxide, a toxin found in emissions from traffic and from power plants and other industrial facilities. This proposal is intended to cut down on the concentrated short term exposure to nitrogen dioxide that is experienced in communities near major roads. The EPA's proposed hourly limit of 80 to 100 parts per billion is even stricter than California's hourly emissions limit of 180 parts per billion; on the other hand, the federal limit per year would remain at 53 parts per billion, compared to California's yearly limit of 30 parts per billion... The EPA says that even short-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide can boost the risk of respiratory effects, and this is seen particularly strongly among asthmatics, children, and senior citizens...
