Auckland,New Zealand -The National Business Review, by Liam Baldwin -July 10 2009: -- The so-called “50-tonne” rule proposed by Transport Minister, Steven Joyce, has provided welcome relief to desperate engineering firms throughout the country, which have faced a sustained period of little work during the economic downturn... Some firms have been forced to close their doors and many others have shedd experienced staff to other industries and also overseas... Truck-Trailer Manufacturers Federation (TTMF) national secretary, Kate Bucknell, said the Land Transport Rule –Vehicle Dimensions and Mass Amendment is the most positive news the industry has enjoyed for many years... Ms Bucknell said if the rule goes ahead mostly as proposed, it would mean an about face in thinking when transport operators commission builds for new truck bodies and trailers. Instead of attempting reduce their road user charges by building certain configurations, they will have more freedom build vehicles that best suit the purpose...
