Road Test * USA - Shows Texting Slows Reaction Time
New York,NY,USA -Car & Driver magazine/CNet, by Lance Whitney -25 June 2009: -- A road test conducted by Car & Driver magazine found that driving while testing has a stronger impact on reaction times than previously thought... During the test, two drivers attempted to hit the break on a Honda Pilot while reading or writing text messages. Both drivers first drove the test vehicle in a straight line, and were instructed to brake in response to a flashing light on the car's dashboard. The drivers' baseline reaction times were measured... The second test involved reading a text message while driving, and the third test required them to type a message while behind the wheel... The drivers were also told to do the tests while under the influence of alcohol... While sober, one of the drivers took an extra 21 feet to hit the brake when driving at 35 mph and reading a text message, and an extra 16 feet while typing a message. At 70 mph, it took him 30 extra feet to hit the brake while reading a text message, and an extra 31 feet while writing a text message. While intoxicated, it took him at extra 7 feet at 35 mph and an extra 15 feet at 70 mph... (TRIBUNE PHOTOS: L.E.
