Electronic on Board Recorders * Canada - Considering EOBR Standard

Ottawa,CAN -Transport Topics (USA) -8 June 2009: -- A Canadian government panel has asked the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators to develop a federal standard for use of electronic onboard recorders, the Canadian Trucking Alliance said Monday... CTA had originally asked federal and provincial governments in 2004 to adopt an EOBR mandate. Transport Canada released a paper in 2006 that found that EOBRs could contribute to safety improvements and improve compliance, among other benefits, CTA said... But Canadian officials decided to wait to see how officials in the United States would rule on EOBRs. The ruling still has not happened, but such a ruling is “likely,” CTA said... The deputy ministers’ recent directive came as a result of a February push from CTA saying that a North American EOBR mandate is “inevitable,” and that Canada should take a more active role in the process, CTA said...
