* Germany - MAN is alleged to have systematically paid bribes
Munich, Germany -DW WORLD -5 May 2009: -- Prosecutors in Germany have opened a corruption investigation into truck making giant MAN which is suspected of paying millions in bribes to sell and lease its vehicles... State prosecutors in Munich said MAN AG is suspected of systematically paying millions in bribes both in and outside Germany in exchange for deals to sell and lease its trucks and buses... Lead prosecutor Manfred Noetzel, added that there is evidence that foreign officials and companies also received payments in return for business. Investigators searched the company's offices, its truck and bus divisions as well as three private homes... MAN, which has Volkswagen as its dominant shareholder, said it was fully cooperating with the prosecutors... Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported that in some cases MAN had made the payments for years, depositing the money in the accounts of friends and relatives of the purchasing personnel... * Sweden - Scania blue-collar union spurns shorter work week
Stockholm,Sweden -Reuters -May 7, 2009: -- Scania said on Thursday the main blue-collar union had rejected the truck maker's proposal to introduce a four-day work week in response to a sharp fall in demand due to the global economic downturn... Scania, majority-controlled by Germany's Volkswagen, said late last month it had begun negotiations with unions on scaling back working hours... In late April when the truck maker presented first-quarter results, Scania Chief Executive, Leif Ostling, said it hoped to implement a four-day week that would be in effect for 6-12 months... * Sweden - Scania P-series gets cleaner, bigger engines
Stockholm,Sweden -Road Transport (UK), by Ian Tonkin -7 May 2009: -- Scania has added bigger, cleaner engines to its line-up of lighter P-series trucks... The 13-litre 360hp and 400hp engines are claimed to deliver better fuel economy thanks to the P-series' lighter chassis... Both engines are rated at Euro-5 thanks to EGR technology... The 360hp engine with 1,850Nm of torque sits below the 380hp SCR 12-litre unit in the range, while the 400hp version mirrors the 420hp SCR engine with 2,100Nm of torque... * Poland - Volvo FL named Fleet Vehicle of the Year
Warsaw,Poland -Fleet Owner, by Brian Straight -May 6, 2009: -- The Fleet Management Institute in Poland and Polish trade magazine Flota have named the Volvo FL the 2009 Fleet Vehicle of the Year in the Fleet Awards Polska Trucks category... The Fleet Awards Polska recognizes the top fleet vehicles on the market, based on opinions of fleet managers. Nominated vehicles are available for testing and votes are submitted online over a three-month period... It is the third Fleet Vehicle of the Year award for Volvo Trucks and the second consecutive year the FL has won. In 2007, the Volvo FH was victorious...
