TOLLS * USA - Six South Florida Expressways to Collect All Tolls Electronically

Miami,FL,USA -The Miami Herald, by Alfonso Chardy -20 April 2009: -- Six expressways in South Florida are set to be converted entirely to electronic "open-rolled tolling," either through SunPass transponders or by sending a bill to the owners of cars identified on camera by their license plates... The Gratigny Parkway is the first that will be converted, with toll collectors set to begin handing out fliers about the change starting in June or July, while the Don Shula, Snapper Creek, Dolphin and Airport expressways and the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike will also be converted over the coming three or four years... The conversion is being touted by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority as a congestion-cutting and safety-boosting measure, but some elected officials are concerned about whether it is fair to people without a SunPass, particularly visitors from out of state. According to the authority's executive director, Javier Rodriguez, out-of-state drivers in their own cars may be sent a bill, particularly if they pass through the toll gates frequently, while those who rent cars can add electronic-toll charges to their credit card bill...
