* TNT Profit Drops 58.1 Percent

The Netherlands -The Journal of Commerce Online (USA), by Thomas L. Gallagher -May 4, 2009: --As the global recession kept up the pressure on express and mail volumes, Dutch logistics giant TNT saw revenue decline 10.2 percent in the first quarter to $3.3 billion... Even as cost cutting measures proceeded ahead of schedule, the carrier’s operating income fell 43.6 percent to $217 million in the quarter. Impairment charges brought net profit after taxes even lower to $99.9 million, down 58.1 percent compared with first quarter 2008...


* USA - Global Slowdown Nips ProLogis Profit

Denver,COL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Thomas L. Gallagher -May 4, 2009: -- Facility provider revenue falls dramatically, profit remains healthy... With substantially lower revenue, distribution facility provider ProLogis earned only slightly less profit in the first quarter, compared with a year ago... Revenue fell 72 percent from $1.6 billion to $455 million in the quarter as industrial property fundamentals reflected global economic weakness and the slowdown in global trade... Throughout the majority of the company's markets, activity was down and the company had to offer more and greater leasing concessions. * Japan - Nippon Express Profit Tumbles

Tokyo,Japan -The Journal of Commerce Online (USA), by Hisane Masaki -May 8, 2009: -- Recession pulls revenue down 3.8 percent, large fine cuts net 58.4 percent... Nippon Express, Japan's largest freight forwarder, said on Friday that it suffered declines in both sales and profit in fiscal 2008, which ended on March 31... The Tokyo-based company's group sales totaled about $18.4 billion in fiscal 2008, down 3.8 percent from the previous fiscal year. The company's group operating, ordinary and net profits all fell sharply in fiscal 2008... Operating profit tumbled 30.9 percent to $337 million, ordinary profit -- which is similar to pre-tax profit under U.S. accounting standards -- plunged 24.9 percent to $423 million, and net profit plummeted 58.4 percent to $153 million...


* Belgium - EC must stand working time proposal

Brussels,Belgium -HGV (Ireland) -8 May 2009: -- The International Road Transport Union (IRU) is urging the European Commission to stand by its proposal to revise the Working Time Directive for road transport workers, despite its rejection by the European Parliament this week... The European Parliament rejected the proposal on the grounds that it excludes genuine self employed workers from the legislation. While the Parliament will now ask the Commission to withdraw its proposal, the IRU maintains that this request must be refused because the proposal is too important to be abandoned... The IRU welcomes the 'general approach' adopted by EU Member States on the revision..


* Ireland - Dublin HGV movements plummet

Dublin,Ireland -HGV -6 May 2009: -- HGV movements in Dublin have plummeted by 65 per cent over the past 18 months, new figures released by Dublin City Council(DCC) confirm... The number of permits granted to HGVs have dropped by up to 65 per cent over the last 18 months... * France - Haulage industry takes a hammering


Paris,France -HGV (Ireland) -29 April 2009: --
The road haulage industry in France has taken a hammering in the first quarter of 2009, which bankruptcies increasing by almost two thirds, when compared with the same period in 2008... French road haulage association FNTR is predicting that more bad news is coming down the tracks, as hauliers struggle to pay the first tranche of their statutory contributions to the State next month... The FNTR has estimated that 40,000 jobs will be lost in the French haulage industry this year. Freight volumes are down between five and 40 per cent depending on the economic sector, while rates have plummeted by up to 20 per cent...
