* USA - Biofuel shift announced by Obama administration

Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine -May 6, 2009: --
The Obama administration announced on Tuesday, May 5, that it plans to increase the use of biofuels, but production of traditional biodiesel made from soybeans and ethanol made from corn would be limited... The Des Moines Register reported that a new EPA proposal calls for the production of 36 billion gallons of biofuel by the year 2022... But less than half of the fuel could be made from crops like soybeans and corn. Instead, most would be made from things like switchgrass, wood chips – or other biomass that doesn’t compete with food production...

* Denmark - Algae on the menu for diesel production

Conpenhagen,Denmark -Owner Driver (Brisbane,QLD,Australia) -9 May 2009: -- With Australia’s road transport sector still heavily reliant on diesel fuel sourced from crude oil, many in the industry are watching developments in alternative fuels, as they seek to reduce costs without sacrificing performance... While there is plenty of work going into LNG and CNG as an alternative, 90 scientists, economists, ocean engineers, biologists and policy makers from around the globe met in Denmark to discuss the use of algae as a replacement for crude oil... Dr Jonathon Trent, Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, says algae is the source of most of the current crude oil production, and can be used to supplement existing oil stocks... Trent says a replacement for fossil fuels needs to be identified within 10 years, to avoid a risk of fuel shortages...

* Belgium - EU bioethanol producers see rising output to 2020

Brussels,Belgium -Reuters, by Jeremy Smith -4 May 2009: --
Europe is likely to pump out increasing amounts of bioethanol over the next 10 years, posting gradual annual output rises as an EU-imposed deadline nears for boosting renewable energy, an industry official said on Monday... While wide discrepancies remain among the European Union's 27 countries in terms of their bioethanol industries, overall production has jumped exponentially since the EU launched its first biofuels directive with renewables targets in 2003... Last year, EU producers turned out 2.82 billion liters of bioethanol, up from 1.80 billion in 2007. Back in 2004, EU output was just 528 million liters, industry figures show...
