* India - Truck rentals rise on agri commodity arrivals - Increase in arrivals of summer fruits, vegetables, wheat procurement

Mumbai,India -The Hindu Business Line, by Suresh P. Iyengar -April 8, 2009: -- Movement of agriculture commodities seems to have revived truck rentals in the last one month even as orders from manufacturing sector and export-import business still remain weak, according to the survey conducted by Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT). Good arrivals of summer fruits, vegetables and wheat procurement led to the surge in truck rental on an average by 5-6 per cent in the last one month. Besides the increased arrivals, a drop of 56 per cent in new addition of truck fleet in last six months has helped push up the rentals, said Mr Ravi Jain, Transport Analyst, IFTRT. With no substantial improvement in the economy in sight, the demand for trucks from the manufacturing and realty sector is expected to be weak. The trucking industry does not seem optimistic about positive reversal in economic climate of the country and rentals do not seem to be taking any major northward movement in next two quarters unless unprecedented investment is undertaken in the infrastructure and realty sector, he said...(Exchange: 1.00 U$S = 49.9828 IN$R)


* South Africa - Total SA introduces Euro 4 trucks to its fleet


Johannesburg,S.Africa -Engineering News, by Chanel Pringle -8 April 2009: -- Petroleum company Total South Africa would replace 20% of its road tanker fleet with Euro 4 standard trucks by 2010 and would replace the remaining 80% of its fleet with Euro 3 standard trucks by 2015, Total South Africa transport and technical services manager Ted Jastrzebski told journalists on Wednesday... The company started negotiating with vehicle manufacturers to acquire more environmentally friendly vehicles and in 2006, Total South Africa bought two Euro 4 trucks from truck and bus manufacturer Scania... Jastrzebski commented that Scania had been the only original equipment manufacturer willing to engage with Total South Africa on providing these vehicles...
