* USA - Navistar, Caterpillar broaden truck ties
Caterpillar's established international dealer network for construction equipment to help Navistar move into the ranks of international truck builders
USA -Fleet Owner, by Jim Mele -Apr 7, 2009: -- Caterpillar Inc. and Navistar International Corp. have revealed more details of their rapidly evolving alliance, announcing yesterday that they will jointly build and market trucks in global markets before the end of the year as well as create a full lineup of vocational trucks to be sold by Caterpillar dealers in North America... The new global project also announced yesterday is a 50/50 joint venture that will "develop, manufacture and distribute commercial trucks in regions outside of North America and India," according to a press release issued yesterday. The markets specifically identified were Australia, Brazil, China, Russia, South Africa and Turkey. The release said products would include both conventional and COE designs sold under Caterpillar and International brands, with initial availability "as early as the third quarter of 2009."... The new JV will take advantage of Caterpillar's established international dealer network for construction equipment to help Navistar move into the ranks of international truck builders such as Daimler and Volvo...
* Germany - Daimler CEO sees cost cuts in all divisions
Berlin,Germany — The Associated Press/The Trucker, by GEORGE FREY -8 April 2009: -- German auto and truck maker Daimler AG will see more cost-cutting and a reduced dividend this year after it warned Wednesday it won’t get through the worst of the recession until the second half of this year... Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche's speech to Daimler shareholders Wednesday in Berlin was interrupted with protests and condemnations of the performance of the company and its managers. Other shareholders yelled for people in the crowd to “shut up!”... Earlier this month, Daimler said it hoped to save €2 billion ($2.7 billion) in personnel costs by cutting work time for 73,000 workers — largely administrative staff — in Germany by as much as five hours a week, but did not plan to eliminate jobs... Those plans are unrelated to the previously announced decision to put some 50,000 automotive production workers on shorter hours. Daimler has said it also plans to put another 18,000 commercial vehicle workers on shorter hours after Easter. German companies often reduce hours worked to scale back output...
* India - Tata Motors to set up truck manufacturing plant in Myanmar
New Delhi,India -PTI/Live Mint (USA) -Apr 7, 2009: -- India’s largest automaker Tata Motors on Tuesday said it will set up a heavy truck manufacturing unit with a capacity of 1,500 trucks per annum in Myanmar... The plant is being set up following an agreement between Indian and Myanmar governments. New Delhi had offered a line of credit of $20 million (about Rs100 crore) to the South East Asian country... The spokesperson, however, did not specify by when the plant will be operational...
