USA -AP/Transport Topics -17 March 2009: -- Caterpillar Inc. said Tuesday it will lay off more than 2,400 employees at five plants in three states as the heavy equipment maker continues to cut costs amid the economic downturn, the Associated Press reported... * Mack chief says SCR testing shows technology ready, performing well

Louisville,KY,USA -The Trucker -18 March 2009: -- Mack Trucks said today that extensive field testing had demonstrated that the company’s selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for EPA’10 is ready and performing well... The testing has also confirmed that Mack’s SCR aftertreatment strategy results in significantly less active regeneration events of the diesel particulate filters (DPF), which increases fuel economy, as well as productivity for both the truck and driver, according to Denny Slagle, Mack president and CEO, who added that in its over-the-road applications, Mack had eliminated active DPF regeneration...

* Volvo says trucks with 2010 SCR will eliminate active regeneration

Louisville,KY,USA -The Trucker -19 March 2009: -- In what the company calls a major benefit for fuel economy and operating costs, Volvo trucks equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control systems will not undergo driving or parked active regeneration of diesel particulate filters (DPF) during normal highway operating conditions... Volvo Trucks North America’s EPA 2010 emission systems integrate its SCR and DPF technologies and will instead employ only passive regeneration, based on extensive testing in customer fleets...

* Truck CEOs address SCR

Louisville,KY,USA -Fleet Owner, by Jim Mele -Mar 19, 2009: -- In an effort to dispel what they term “growing misinformation” about the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet the 2010 emissions standards, the major truck and engine OEMs adopting SCR – backed up by a major producer of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and two major truckstop chains – gathered here at the Mid-America Trucking Show for a special “summit” on the subject... “This is probably the last time you’ll see heavy-duty engine and truck makers agreeing on anything,” joked Chris Patterson, the retiring president & CEO of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA)... He went on to say that SCR is – at least from DTNA’s perspective – the “silver bullet” the trucking industry has been waiting for; a technology that will help commercial trucks achieve near-zero emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) while giving customers improved fuel economy...
