STIMULUS BILL * USA - Includes $300 million for diesel emissions funding

While most talk regarding the federal $819 billion stimulus package centers on construction and infrastructure, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association hopes one $300 million portion of the bill will also help small-business truckers

House and senate versions of the stimulus package each include $300 million for the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act – a historically underfunded program started years ago, which sends federal dollars toward trucking businesses to help cut emissions from idling and older truck engines... OOIDA is part of a broad coalition of organizations that asked Congress for DERA funding for truckers... The diesel emissions-reduction funding could help many small-business trucking companies, said Mike Joyce, OOIDA director of legislative affairs in Washington, DC...


* Republicans Reject $25B for Infrastructure

Washington,DC,USA -Traffic World, by Thomas L. Gallagher -3 Feb 2009: -- Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., put in a bid to add $25 billion in infrastructure spending to the Obama administration's economic stimulus plan, launching an effort to bring highways into the stimulus package... Murray's proposal called for an additional $5 billion for transit programs and $7 billion for water projects beyond what was already included... Senate Republicans on Feb. 3 blocked the amendment, insisting that further infrastructure projects could only be funded through cutting other stimulus package funds... The vote was close as Democrats had just 58 votes for the amendment, just shy of the 60-vote supermajority needed...
