"GREEN"-TRUCKS * USA - Wal-Mart testing new hybrid trucks for its fleet
New York,NY,USA -Reuters by Nicole Maestri, and Dave Zimmerman -Feb 2, 2009: -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said on Monday that it will test two new types of hybrid trucks and two types of trucks powered by alternative fuels as the world's largest retailer tries to make its trucking fleet more efficient... Wal-Mart said it is working with suppliers, including ArvinMeritor and Peterbilt, to develop and test the new technologies... Wal-Mart has one of the largest private trucking fleets in the world, and vowed in 2005 to make its trucking fleet 25 percent more efficient by the end of 2008. It said the latest tests are an effort to double its fleet efficiency by 2015, from its 2005 baseline... Wal-Mart is also testing a diesel-electric hybrid truck developed by ArvinMeritor, and a Peterbilt heavy duty hybrid truck that uses a diesel-electric hybrid power system developed by Eaton Corp and Paccar Inc....
* AEP’s Green Fleet Recognized By EPA
Washington,DC,USA -environmental leader -February 2, 2009: -- American Electric Power, which operates 110 flex-fuel vehicles, 24 hybrid utility trucks, and more than 80 hybrid cars, including three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, has become the first utility to be recognized as a SmartWay Transport partner by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its efforts to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. AEP has purchased 800,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel since 2005...
* ATA advocates big green trucks
Washington,DC,USA -Pacific Shipper -February 2, 2009: -- The American Trucking Associations argues that longer, heavier trucks with engine speed limiters would be greener trucks, but not everyone in the trucking industry agrees... ATA told the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Jan. 28 that raising truck size and weight limits would create more productive and efficient tractor-trailer combinations and result in fewer truck miles traveled... ATA also recommended limiting truck speeds to 65 mph through the mandatory use of engine governors; a national 65 mph speed limit; national fuel economy standards for medium and heavy-duty trucks; and tax credits or grants for trucking companies installing idling reduction equipment... The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, which opposes mandatory engine speed limiters, called ATA’s proposals “greenwashing”...

Interesting post. We now see that Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, Kenworth, Peterbilt, and PACCAR are working hard to promote, use, and sell hybrid technology on a commercial scale. That's where real change and cost savings can be realized
