In Ohio, about 360,000 people are employed by the trucking industry... In 2008, about 18,000 people in the Ohio trucking industry lost their jobs... Richard Durst, chief executive office of Arctic Express, said the problem is simple: companies like his are making fewer deliveries... When companies like Arctic Express face a decline in shipping orders, many of their tractor-trailers sit parked and empty. That creates yet another problem... Durst added that selling rigs is one way his company is trying to keep from initiating layoffs...

It’s suddenly OK to move heavy freight that shippers once considered “just-in-time” or “next-day” in slower LTL and even truckload lanes — at lower rates. That has expedited carriers moving quickly to find other ways to make money... Mike Steele, president and chief executive of Circumference America, an independent contractor for Sunteck Transport Group, began offering expedited trucking since the day he started his own company in 2006. But the service has contributed little to his bottom line... The market for fast freight — whether its hauled by LTL or truckload carriers, specialized fleets or expedited package and parcel companies — will likely become more challenging as demand for transportation in general continues to decline...
