AUTO MARKETS * China - China Races Past U.S. In Passenger Car Sales

Pekin,China -AP/FORBES (USA), by Tina Wang -11 Feb 2009: -- More cars were sold in China than in the U.S. in Jan., but it may be too early to say whether the reversal is more than a recessionary blip... China's passenger car sales, including sport utility vehicles, for January totaled 610,600 units, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers posted Tuesday. This compared with 522,374 cars, including SUVs and crossover vehicles, sold in the United States... General Motors --in partnership with China's SAIC Motor Corp.--and Volkswagen vehicles are the top sellers in China, but local producers from Chery Automobile to BYD are expanding aggressively. Japanese automakers are expanding in China as well, with Toyota Motor and China's FAW Group teaming up to build a plant in northeastern China, and Honda Motor joining Dongfeng Motor in doubling the production capacity of their venture. Ford Motor is reportedly shopping its Volvo unit to various Chinese automakers...
