* USA - PACCAR has different approach for 2009
Warrenville,WA,USA -The Trucker, by LYNDON FINNEY -11 Feb 2009: -- If there was ever any doubt about how harshly the economic downturn is impacting the trucking industry, read Bill Jackson answers. He is the general manager of Peterbilt Motors Co. and a vice president of its parent company PACCAR, “Peterbilt is not going to be at the Mid-America Trucking Show this year”... Instead, the company is planning a series of customer/media events, mostly at its production facilities in the U.S. and Canada... It turns out that Kenworth Truck Co., another PACCAR company, will not exhibit either... “We survived 2008 and we’ll survive 2009 quarter by quarter,” he said, hinting that he felt things might begin to turn around sometime late this year... He openly shared with us that Peterbilt would cut Class 8 production at its Denton, Texas, plant by 13 trucks a day from 73 to 60... But given the fact that Peterbilt sold 2,335 fewer Class 8 trucks in 2008 than it did in 2007, that’s smart business and very understandable... And, of course, every other OEM except one, Navistar, showed a decline in 2008... (Picture: Scott's blog)

* USA - Mack, Volvo offer DPFs for California operators
USA -Fleet Owner -Feb 10, 2009: -- Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks North America are now offering retrofit diesel particulate filters (DPF) that will allow operators using non-EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines sold from 1996 to 2002 to meet California emissions requirements... The DPFs come with a five-year/150,000 mi. warranty and can be ordered through any Mack or Volvo dealer in the U.S. or Canada. The DPF, which must be installed by the dealer, is integrated into existing exhaust systems and is offered in various sizes based on engine displacement and horsepower... The new regulations from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) apply to all diesel-powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs. that operate in the state. CARB, which will offer financial assistance and incentives for DPF purchases, projects their use will reduce particulate matter emissions by 13 tons a day in 2014...
