* UPS, Postal Service Set Retail-Return Partnership

Atlanta,GA,USA -Transport Topics -10 Feb 2009: -- UPS Inc. said Tuesday it is partnering with the U.S. Postal Service for a new retail-return service in which consumers can send returns by UPS via their own mailboxes... Known as UPS Returns Flexible Access, it will use the post office’s parcel return service combined with UPS’ delivery network to allow retailers to provide their customers with increased convenience in returning items...


* USA - FedEx Freight layoffs will number 900

Memphis,TENN,USA -The Memphis Business Journal, by Trey Heath & Christopher Sheffield -February 9, 2009: -- FedEx Freight is making “staffing adjustments” to about 900 positions at 150 of its facilities... Employees were made aware of the cuts in an e-mail to employees by FedEx Freight president and CEO Doug Duncan Thursday... Duncan cited a continued decline in consumer spending and overall industrial production as putting unprecedented pressures on the trucking industry...


* Canada - Vitran Reports Fourth-Quarter Loss

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Transport Topics -10 Feb 2009: -- Vitran Corp. said Tuesday it lost $ $3.2 million, or 23 cents a share, compared with a profit of $1.7 million, or 12 cents, a year earlier... The Toronto-based trucking and transportation firm said its revenue slipped 11.5% to $154.2 million... Vitran has truckload, less-than-truckload and logistics operations in the United States and Canada. LTL segment revenue fell 14% to $127.1 million, and the unit took a loss of $4.7 million... Full-year revenue rose 8.3% to $726.3 million. LTL revenue rose 4.5% and logistics revenue gained 53.3%...
