* DOT: Biggest Freight Fall Since ‘01
Washington,DC,USA -Traffic World, by Thomas L. Gallagher -11 Feb 2009: -- Freight movements declined in December for the fourth time in five months, bringing the year to a crashing end with the largest five-month decline since mid-2000... The Transportation Services Index fell 2.3 percent in December, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics... At 105.1 in December, the freight TSI is at its lowest level since September 2003 and is down 7.1 percent from its historic peak of 113.1 reached in November 2005...
* Arkansas Best trims employees as demand declines
Fort Smith, Ark,USA -Associated Press/FORBES -11 Feb 2009: -- Trucking company Arkansas Best Corp. laid off 1,100 employees in the fourth quarter of 2008 and another 350 in January as freight demand declined, Chief Financial Officer Judy R. McReynolds said Wednesday... Speaking at the BB&T Transportation Services Conference, McReynolds said the Fort Smith, Ark.-based company has reduced its staff by 18 percent since the fourth-quarter of 2006, when many industry observers believe that a U.S. freight recession began. As of the end of last year, the company had 10,342 employees... McReynolds said the reductions were necessary to trim costs as shipment weights declined and demand fell off across the industry...
* Lower Macungie truck deliverer to cut 84 jobs - Firm cites loss of Mack Trucks contract
Macungie,PA,USA -The Morning Call, by Tyrone Richardson -February 11, 2009: -- Auto Truck Transport USA Inc., a company that delivers new trucks for rig makers, has lost its contract with Mack Trucks and will lay off 84 union and nonunion employees at its Lower Macungie Township facility by the end of March, according to a company statement... The total number of Auto Truck Transport workers in Lower Macungie was not available... But the company, based in Kenosha, Wis., employs more than 1,000 drivers and has locations in areas such as Cleveland, Portland and Springfield, Ohio, according to the statement...
