* Sweden - Volvo slashes 1,600 jobs

Stockholm,Sweden -The Associated Press/The Trucker -13 Jan 2009: -- Swedish truck maker AB Volvo said Tuesday it will lay off more than 1,600 employees in Sweden as it slows production amid falling demand for trucks... The layoffs will be in addition to more than 2,000 job cuts announced by the truck unit last year, Volvo spokesman Stefan Karlsson said... He said the new cuts involved about 1,020 workers at two production plants in Sweden and 600 workers at Volvo’s Powertrain unit, which makes engines, gear boxes and rear axles for trucks... * USA - Navistar Settles With Ford, To End Diesel Engine Accord

USA -Transport Topics -14 Jan 2009: -- Navistar International Corp. and Ford Motor Co. said they have settled litigation and ended a diesel-engine supply agreement... The two will end their diesel engine supply agreement at the end of this year, but will continue to collaborate on initiatives including their existing Blue Diamond Truck and Parts joint ventures, Navistar said late Tuesday... The companies will still work together in a joint venture that sells Ford F-650 and F-750 medium duty trucks, Navistar said... Navistar makes International brand trucks...


* Canada - First of new large hybrid trucks showcased in Moncton

Moncton,CAN -CBC News -January 13, 2009: -- The face of the large trucking industry may be changing after Peterbilt Motors rolled out one of the first hybrid models in Moncton... U.S.-based Peterbilt used its Moncton showroom to show off the new hybrid heavy truck on Tuesday. It was the first time this new style of hybrid has been displayed in Atlantic Canada... Even though the truck costs more up front, officials say it's worth it... Peter Nelson, the executive director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, said the industry is moving toward greener options...
