CLEAN TRUCKS PROGRAM * USA - Swift Payment To Trucking Giant Peeves Little Guys
The Port of Los Angeles has made its first clean truck program incentive payment - a check for $8.24 million to Swift Transportation, Inc.
Long Beach,CA,USA -The Cunningham Report -11 Jan 2009: -- The money represents a payment of $20,000 per truck for 412 trucks that comply with 2007 U.S. EPA emissions standards that the Phoenix-based company has put into harbor drayage service at the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach... However, only the Port of L.A. has offered the $20,000-per-truck incentive, and it is poised to pay out up to $44 million to companies that had signed up for the program by the port's cutoff date of Sept. 19... The L.A. port made the offer in order to expedite the 80-percent reduction in harmful emissions from trucks that both ports hope to achieve by 2012... That Swift, one of the nation's largest trucking companies, got paid first raises questions about the process, said Brian Griley, president of Southern Counties Express. "It doesn't seem like it's fair when everybody put their documents in at the same time," he said. Griley is waiting for $1.1 million in incentive money to defray the cost of 55 cleaner-burning diesel trucks that his Carson-based company has already purchased...
