MEXICANS' TRUCKS * USA - Few Participate in Cross-border Trucking
Washington,DC,USA -Traffic World, by Ari Natter -6 Nov 2008: -- An independent final report on the Department of Transportation's cross border trucking program found that the number of participants fell far short of agency predictions, adversely affecting their ability to evaluate the effectiveness of the program... According to the report, released Thursday, though 700 Mexican-based carriers expressed an interest, only 25 Mexican-based carriers participated in the program, which allows Mexican and U.S. domiciled trucks to operate beyond commercial border zones... Still, the report also said the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency charged with running the program, found sufficient safety and inspection measures were in place, leading the agency to hail the report as a victory...
* Report on Mexican trucks finds few OOS rates
Houston,TX,USA -Modern Bulk Transporter - Nov 6, 2008: -- Although a report on Mexican trucks crossing into the United States indicated a larger sample of carriers is needed to make a statistically significant comparison of safety performance, the findings showed that the project participants had lower out-of-service rates (OOS) relative to the OOS rates for all US-domiciled trucks... Members of the Independent Evaluation Panel who conducted the study were charged with a comprehensive evaluation of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) United States-Mexico Cross-Border Trucking Demonstration Project, which began September 7, 2007. The panel had the responsibility of independently reviewing this project for 12 months, assessing the implementation of US motor carrier safety rules, and evaluating the compliance and safety record of Mexico-domiciled carriers and trucks operating in the United States under the project. The report was issued October 31... The panel also said that their work verified that FMCSA implemented policies and regulations regarding admitting Mexico-domiciled carriers into the demonstration project, establishing safety mechanisms at the border, ensuring enforcement of safety rules by state enforcement officials, and carrying out the DOT's commitment to check every truck and every driver every time...
