Trucks' Plan * USA - Feds' funding plan may get cargo off roads
A U.S. Transportation Department official will announce an intiative to help reduce cargo-truck traffic in the region
Norfolk,VA,USA -The Daily Press (Newport News,VA), by PETER FROST -October 9, 2008: -- The U.S. deputy secretary of transportation will be in Norfolk today to announce a plan to allow the government to initiate funding for projects that attempt to ease highway congestion by getting trucks off the roads... A Transportation Department spokesman declined to confirm details of the plan and wouldn't elaborate on how it would work. But the underlying goal of such initiatives — also pushed by the U.S. Maritime Administration — is to relieve congestion on the nation's overcrowded highways by urging shippers to use marine highways to transport cargo...
