* Michigan bills would shield physicians who report unfit drivers

The Michigan Senate overwhelmingly approved two bills intended to shield doctors from lawsuits based on their decisions about reporting unfit drivers

Many people who have suffered medical conditions, such as seizures or blackouts, take great care as to when to get back behind the wheel of their personal and/or commercial vehicles. But some throw caution to the wind and don’t wait to see if their conditions persist before heading back down the road... The Michigan Department of State receives about 5,000 requests annually to test drivers based on concerns about physical or mental impairments. About 2,000 of those drivers are prohibited from driving, The Associated Press reported. And Michigan is one of 18 states without legal protections for doctors who report or don’t report unsafe drivers...


* New California law is intended to reduce pollution from vehicles

Sacramento,Cal,USA -Land Line Magazine -October 8, 2008: –- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill into law that taps truckers and others to help reduce pollution... State law now authorizes air pollution control districts and air quality management districts to levy a fee of up to $2 on motor vehicle registrations. The fee can be increased up to $6 if certain conditions are met... The new law, authorizes the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District to increase the fee to as much as $30. The revenue would be used to develop “incentive-based programs” to achieve state and federal air quality standards...
