* USA - Three owner-operators to test new Freightliner Cascadia

Grain Valley,MO,USA -Land Line Magazine -October 7, 2008: -- Three owner-operators with diverse backgrounds and operations will each get their own 2009 Freightliner Cascadia to drive for 12 months and blog about their experiences online... The Slice of Life program by Freightliner is in its first year, launched in August to collect feedback from working truckers about the new model... Henry Albert, owner of Albert Transport Inc. of Statesville, NC; Dick McCorkle, who works for Perkins Specialized Transportation in Noblesville, IN; and Kurt Grote, who works for John Christner Trucking in Sapulpa, OK, will drive the Cascadia in day-to-day operations and blog about it on www.SliceofTruckerLife.com... Freightliner is promoting the Cascadia, equipped with a Detroit Diesel DD15 engine, as a fuel saver as well as a leader in power and performance... The three truckers will attend show events including the 2009 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY. They will be at the Freightliner Trucks booth to answer questions and share experiences with the new truck...


* Europe - Truckmakers seek to avert car-style CO2 caps

Brusells,Belgium -EurActiv.com -25 September 2008: -- As MEPs prepare to vote on a legislative proposal imposing caps on the CO2 emissions of new cars, the automotive industry is warning against introducing similar measures for vans and minibuses, which the Commission is planning to propose by the end of the year... Indeed, according to green NGOs, the committee is ready to "cede to heavy industry pressure" and insert "numerous loopholes" in the future law. The main changes that could be integrated include a phase-in between 2012 and 2015, rebates for alternative fuel vehicles and additional allowances for using 'eco-innovations'... But in any case, even a voluntary fuel efficiency target by 2020 would constitute a step forward for the heavy trucking industry, which is currently exempted from any CO2 legislation at European level... No industry-wide cap appears to be on the agenda. CO2 is even excluded from the scope of a recent Commission proposal to review the so-called Eurovignette Directive to enable national authorities to charge heavy road vehicles for the congestion and air pollution costs they impose on society...


* Sweden - Volvo trucks reduces capacity in the European production system

Gothenburg,Sweden -HGV Ireland (Dublin,Ireland) -8 October 2008: -- Volvo Trucks is taking measures to downsize capacity in its European production system to meet the declining demand for trucks in the European market. As a consequence, the company will initiate negotiations with the unions regarding staffing level cutbacks of approximately 1,400 employees at the company's plants in Ghent in Belgium, and Gothenburg and UmeƄ in Sweden. A cost-reduction plan will also be implemented to meet the lower sales levels and increasing raw material cost...
