OPINION * USA - Slimmer packages mean slimmer profits for truckers
New York,NY,USA -Associated Press/CNN Money -October 6, 2008: -- That bottle of condensed detergent or your lightweight laptop are making the economic downturn even more difficult to bear for the nation's trucking companies, an economist said Monday... Speaking in a panel discussion at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition, American Trucking Associations Chief Economist Bob Costello said that slimmed-down products and packaging are making hauls smaller for truckers compounding a period of already weak demand... A growing number of companies are reducing packaging to cut costs amid a weakening U.S. economy... Costello said that the weak economy and the corresponding ripple effects, coupled with the yet-unknown effects of the widening credit crisis might cause more trucking bankruptcies this year than the nation has seen this decade... "Trucking failures might exceed the level of the 2000-2001 (recession) if the credit markets do not come back when expected," he said...
