* France - Renault Trucks tests a Hybrid refuse collector

Lyon,France -Lyon Aderly -26 Augusto 2008: -- In October, the Lyon-based manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, Renault Trucks, will start using the first household refuse collector with a hybrid engine in the streets of Lyon. The truck is being launched in partnership with Sita (Suez Environnement) and Greater Lyon, in the framework of the competitive cluster Lyon Urban Truck and Bus... The vehicle, known as the Renault Premium Distribution Hybrys Tech, is powered by an electric battery which recharges during deceleration and braking. Another battery provides the power up to 20 km/h (approx. 12 mph) and then the diesel engine takes over. This is a test phase to verify the vehicle’s performance, which is expected to consume 30% less fuel than a standard refuse collector and to reduce CO2 emissions as well... The Renault Premium Distribution Hybrys Tech should be on the market by the end of 2009...


* Kenya - Hard-hit as four-axle truck orders drop

Nairobi,Kenya -The Business Daily Africa, by Miano Kihu -September 3, 2008: -- The ban on four-axle trucks on Kenyan roads has started to be felt by manufacturers even as a section of transporters lobby against the overload which increases road maintenance costs... A leading manufacturer in Mombasa says orders for bodies with four-axles have ceased... ‘‘Orders for building four -axles have not been forthcoming this year, but last year we had quite a number,’’ said Mr Shiraz Mohammed, the Managing Director of Ocean Engineering which serves numerous transport firms in the Great Lakes countries... He said the company was currently building a maximum of three axles and admits that the new policy to rid the region of four axles had affected his business...
