STUDY * USA - As Gas Prices Rise, Traffic Fatalities Plummet
Traffic death toll headed to lowest level since 1961
MICH,USA -Automotive Digest -2 Sept 2008: -- Drop in toll fueled by high gas prices, according to Transportation Research Institute at U of MI study. 12 month study ending in April found driving, fatalities declined as gas prices rose, with huge decline in March, April w/ gas over $3.20/ gallon... If decline continues for balance of year, study predicts "unheard of improvement" in motor vehicle fatalities... Nonessential driving reduced - nighttime leisure, weekends. That driving riskier than daylight commute at lower speeds... Drivers also trying to save gas by slowing down... Americans drove 12.2B fewer miles in June than year earlier, continuing trend beginning Nov 2007...
