Contract Freighters Inc, now Con-way Truckload, has taken several smart steps... Saved 2.8M gal ($11.2M) of diesel/year and reduced annual carbon emissions 62M lbs... Has implemented green technologies that pay off in 1st half of truck life... Setting engine governors on 2,700 tractors from a top speed of 70 mph to 65 mph took 6 months... Switch to wide-base tires on tractor rear axles improved fuel economy 0.2 mpg and took 3 years. Putting the tires on 8,600 trailers won't be complete until 2012... Other successful measures include reducing weight, improving aerodynamics and reducing idling... Class-8 hybrid trucks still too expensive to pay off...
