OPINION * USA - Truckers being driven out of business
In my opinion, the general public of the United States doesn't know what's happening to lives of people in the trucking industry, which is losing ground daily
Ypsilanti,Mich,USA -mlive.com, by Patricia A. Bunyea -August 23, 2008: -- ... Why is this happening? It's because of diesel fuel costs. Trucks get between 5 and 6 miles to the gallon, meaning they're paying about $1 a mile in fuel cost alone. In addition, they must pay federal highway use tax, be licensed in every state they travel in, pay for all types of permits and other taxes and keep their truck in tip-top shape while keeping records of everything they do up to the minute... Most people don't realize the fact that there's not one thing they have that hasn't been touched by a truck of some sort. Yes, trains and airplanes do also carry freight, but a truck is what gets it to them and then it's again the truck that gets it to the final destination. People would also say that they're paying for this service through higher cost of goods, but it's not the trucker that is getting this increase... I know it to be fact that after the cost of fuel, drivers' wages and brokers' fees there is nothing left for taxes, repairs, cell phones, etc. He has nothing left for his household to pay his mortgage, utilities or food for his family. Many truckers are losing their only way of making a living (their truck) and even their homes that some mortgage again to pay for fuel up front...
