SPEED LIMITERS * Canada - Federal push for speed limiters on trucks faces roadblocks
The federal government says slowing down big rigs on highways is good for the environment, but many provinces are rebuffing its calls to legislate the mandatory use of speed limiters for trucks
Ottawa,Ontario, Canada -The Ottawa Citizen -July 6, 2008: -- ... In a report released Friday, the federal government reveals that capping the speed of commercial trucks at 105 km/h could result in saving 228 million litres of diesel fuel and 0.64 megatonnes of greenhouse gases annually... The savings would be equal to 1.4 per cent of the total diesel consumed on Canadian roads each year, with Ontario and Quebec accounting for 64 per cent of the savings, said Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon... Jurisdiction over the use of speed limiters lies with the provinces... Quebec has already passed legislation requiring trucks to activate a microchip in their engine limiting their speed to 105 km/h, and Ontario recently followed suit. Enforcement has not begun in either province...
