Intelligent Transportation Systems * USA - Bay Area Selected For One of The World's Largest Tests



CAL,USA -ITS America -4 July 2008: -- The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have selected San Francisco as the test site for a new program that aims to lower traffic congestion and improve commutes. As part of the SafeTrip-21 initiative, the Bay Area will test a variety of Intelligent Transportation Systems technology applications designed to ease logjams, improve public transportation services, and reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries. For the SafeTrip-21 campaign, GPS-equipped cellular phones from up to 10,000 commuters and transit vehicles relaying information from roads within a 200 mile radius to traffic management centers will be field tested. With this information in hand, San Francisco Bay Area commuters will be able to make informed decisions about the routes they take and steer clear of traffic jams during their morning and evening commutes. Another SafeTrip-21 program in development seeks to group existing technologies such as safety advisories, electronic toll collection, on-board displays of commuter rail and transit bus connections, and trip planning and traveler information onto a single platform. The DOT and Caltrans partnership is also working to create a national "test bed" to promote the creation of a Vehicle Infrastructure Integration system that uses WiFi and Dedicated Short Range Communications to notify drivers about hazardous driving conditions...
