TRUCKING INDUSTRY TROUBLES * Canada - Facing uncertain future

In a few short years, Ontario's trucking industry has gone from having driver shortages to staving off bankruptcy

North Bay,Ontario,Canada -The North Bay Nugget, by ANTONELLA ARTUSO & IAN ROBERTSON -3 July 2008: -- ... Doug Switzer, the Ontario Trucking Association's manager of government relations, said... Adding up to 15 of the association's 1,000 members have gone belly up... "It's not a huge percentage but some of the bigger ones (trucking companies) -- we're sort of keeping our fingers crossed that they're still going to be here a year from now," he said... The industry has been hurt by Ontario's declining manufacturing sector, Switzer said. Yearly cross-border truck trips are down by 10 per cent or one million trips compared to just three or four years ago... In 2004, trucking experts predicted the province would face huge shortages in drivers over the next six years... Switzer said some firms are trimming their rosters through attrition, though there are still demands in some quarters for qualified drivers...
