TAX POLICY * Australia - Coalition blocks hike of heavy vehicle diesel excise
Sydney,Australia -ABC News -14 May 2008: -- The Senate has blocked the Federal Government's plans to increase the diesel fuel excise on 350,000 heavy vehicles... The Government wanted to increase the charge collected from the fuel, used by trucks and buses, to cover future road costs... The Coalition has used its majority in the Senate to disallow the regulation to increase the charge... Nationals leader Warren Truss says it would have driven up the cost of every transport task in Australia... "It's inflationary, it puts up the price of food and groceries and everything that people buy around Australia"...
