And Allow Bigger and Heavier Trucks on America’s Roads and Bridges
Washington,DC,USA -Business Wire -May 14, 2008: -- Truck Safety Coalition: Families of fatal truck crashes and Members of Congress will hold a news conference on Wednesday to protest a trucking and shipping industry front group ("Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation") push this week on Capitol Hill to weaken federal truck safety laws by increasing truck weights to 97,000 pounds or more from the current 80,000-pound federal limit... Safety groups also will release the findings of an independent national poll on American motorists' views on truck size and weight issues... More than 5,000 people are killed each year in crashes involving large trucks, equivalent to an airplane crash every week and representing 12 percent of all traffic fatalities. Large trucks account for a disproportionate share of deaths based on miles traveled (nearly 2.4 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled), which is more than 50 percent greater than the rate for all vehicles on the roads. In crashes involving passenger vehicles and large trucks, 98 percent of fatalities are occupants of the passenger vehicle. The costs of large truck crashes exceed $41 billion per year. One 80,000 pound tractor-trailer truck does as much damage to roads and bridges as 9,600 cars...
