CLEAN TRUCKS * USA - Ports plan shift to LNG trucks to reap savings

Long Beach,CA,USA -The Long Beach Press-Telegram, by Kristopher Hanson -5 May 2008: -- Motorists frustrated with skyrocketing fuel prices and America's reliance on foreign oil might find some comfort in what the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are doing with liquefied natural gas... Fed up with toxic emissions from industry, port authorities have dedicated several hundred million dollars to fund a complete turnover of the roughly 16,000 diesel big rigs now serving the waterfront... The monumental effort, which they expect to complete by 2012, includes replacing half of the current fleet with trucks powered by liquefied natural gas, or LNG... As a transportation fuel, it retails for about $1 less per gallon than diesel and is significantly cleaner than oil-based fuels... Natural gas is used in passenger cars, vans and trucks and work vehicles like garbage trucks and public bus fleets... The ports jumped on the LNG bandwagon as they were drafting the joint "Clean Trucks Program" last year. Officials decided to spend their money - and public bonds - to heavily subsidize the purchase of several thousand LNG trucks... Large carriers like California Cartage, South Counties Express, TTSI and others quickly jumped on board, pledging LNG vehicles for their fleets... The ports' commitment to natural gas and alternative fuel technologies and vehicles - estimated at about $500million through five years - represents less than a quarter-percent of that total...
