* USA - OEMs Tout 2010 Engine Choices - Analyst Sees Reshaped Industry
Louisville,Ky,USA -Transport Topics, by Frederick Kiel -April 7, 2008: -- As competing engine makers continued their public battle over the best technology for meeting 2010 federal emission standards, analysts said the outcome of the competition could dramatically transform the industry... In remarks at the Mid-America Trucking Show here, executives of Mack Trucks Inc. and Daimler Trucks North America vigorously defended their companies’ planned use of selective catalytic reduction, while a leader of International Truck and Engine Corp. touted his decision to stay away from SCR and use exhaust gas recirculation... Meanwhile, Bruce Plaxton, president of truck consulting firm BGP Marketing Solutions, Schaumburg, Ill., said that the 2010 emissions dispute could change the industry’s landscape... “More stuff is going on in the background than anyone realizes, and I could easily see that 2010 will lead to major consolidations in the industry.” Plaxton told, based on his conversations with industry leaders. “The cost to develop these engines is absolutely mind-boggling.”...

Munich,Germany -Bloomberg/Transport Topics (USA) -10 Apr 2008: -- Truck maker MAN AG is not obligated to offer to buy all the shares of Swedish rival Scania AB’s shares, even as MAN has ownership ties with Volkswagen AG.... The Swedish regulatory agency said that Volkswagen received an exemption from the Swedish Industry and Commerce Stock Exchange Committee after VW acquired the Scania stakes of the Wallenberg family and its Investor AB holding company on March 3, raising its voting control to 68.6%...

Charlotte,NC,USA -The Observer The Charlotte Observer/Transport Topics -9 April 2008: -- Freightliner Trucks plans to lay off about 1,500 workers at a North Carolina truck plant... The cuts, which would affect more than half the facility’s work force, would take effect June 6, when operations are reduced from two shifts a day to one, the paper reported... The plant, in Cleveland, N.C., is about 40 miles north of Charlotte. It employs about 2,900 workers and has seen production drop along with demand for new trucks in response to new diesel emissions standards that raised prices, said...
* Germany - Daimler’s Earnings to Rise on Growth in Russia, China

Daimler expects unit sales to increase further in 2008, while earnings are expected to be significantly higher than in 2007, The company’s truck unit will report an average 8% return from 2010, and may add a truck plant in Russia, as that country’s growing economy boosts demand...
