BORDER TROUBLES * Venezuela / Colombia - Closing Chokes Trade, Truckers Say

Venezuelan and Colombian trucks haven't been allowed to cross the country's common border since yesterday amid escalating military and political tensions

Caracas,Venezuela -Bloomberg, by Matthew Walter -March 4, 2008: -- ... The customs checkpoints at three border crossings between the two countries have been closed, said Arsenio Manzanero, a representative from Venezuela's national transportation chamber, a trade group representing cargo trucking companies... "Exports and imports have been paralyzed,'' Manzanero said in a telephone interview... The conflict threatens the more than $5 billion in annual trade between Colombia and Venezuela... At the customs checkpoint in Venezuela's Tachira state alone, more than 200 trucks are waiting to cross into Colombia, Manzanero said... This afternoon, customs officials began allowing trucks with perishable food items to pass, he said...
