An alarming new report says truckers at the Port of Oakland face an increased risk of cancer
Oakland,CAL,USA -KGO/ABC 7 News (San Francisco, CAL), by Terry McSweeney -Dec. 4, 2007 -- ... This report looked at the pollution levels inside the cabs of truckers at the port. What it found was ten times the amount of pollution than in the air just a mile or two away... The report was put together by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports. They put air monitors inside seven trucks and measured the pollution. It found the levels of diesel soot, or black carbon, at ten times the levels at a nearby Oakland neighborhood, and that truckers spend 63 percent of their time at or near the Port of Oakland... Truckers say they spend a lot of that time waiting to be loaded or unloaded... The solution according to the report was to have the trucking companies hire the independent truckers and be responsible for updating the trucks clean air equipment. It also wants the Port of Oakland to have environmental standards in its agreements with trucking companies... (Click to See significative video on)
