* Trucking firm hit with multi million dollar judgment
Phoenix,AR,USA -TruckStopCanada, by Admin -December 4, 2007: -- Swift Transportation Co. has been hit with $36.5 million in damages in a lawsuit over a fatal traffic crash in Kansas. The verdict included more than $13.5 million in punitive damages... It was returned Friday after a nearly four-week trial in Maricopa County Superior Court... Steven Copple, a Phoenix lawyer for the plaintiffs, argued that significant monetary damages were warranted because Swift failed to produce driver logs the company was required to keep under federal regulations... Swift claimed it was unable to produce the logs. The logs may have shed light on whether the Swift driver at fault in the crash was cruising down a roadway in a fatigued physical state, Copple said... The verdict shows the significance jurors placed over the loss of a Kansas man who left behind a widow and eight children, ages 13 to 26, at the time of the crash, Copple said... Robert Greer, a Phoenix attorney representing Swift, said the verdict will be carefully reviewed and legal remedies for the trucking company will be sought in the trial court and, if necessary, in the appellate courts...
* Putnam Trucking Company Closes
Putnam County,WV,USA - WSAZ-TV, by Anna Baxter -Dec 3, 2007: -- A trucking company has closed its doors in Putnam County... We're told Tri-State Transfer closed abruptly on Friday. It's owned by Ward Trucking out Pennsylvania... The company sent us a statement saying "this was an extremely difficult decision for ward trucking to make, but ultimately needed as a result of the inability to operate in the state above a break even due to the poor rates and lack of density into and out of West Virginia"... An employee tells us 30 people work at the Putnam County facility... A Ward Trucking facility in Parkersburg also closed this weekend... The company wouldn't tell us if the employees will get a severance package...
* Fenway Leads Acquisition of Logistics Firm
Private-equity firm Fenway Partners said Tuesday it has acquired a majority interest in East Coast Warehouse & Distribution Corp. and related companies, including Safeway Trucking Corp... Fenway made the acquisition in August along with Refrigerated Holdings, its platform for investments in the temperature-controlled logistics sector, the company said in a statement...
