FUEL RULE * USA - Calif. regulation affects warranties
State's new emissions regulation is likely to force automakers to extend their contracts on many faulty vehicles
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -December 3, 2007: -- A new California regulation likely will force automakers to extend vehicle warranties for hundreds of thousands of additional vehicles that have faulty emissions equipment... The new rule comes as tailpipe emissions are getting increased scrutiny from Congress and states, largely stemming from a Supreme Court ruling in April that allows the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate vehicle carbon dioxide emissions under the Clean Air Act... Today, vehicle recalls related to emissions are overseen by the EPA and often get little notice, unlike federal safety-related recalls... California, which is allowed to have its own vehicle emissions rules under the Clean Air Act, moved to change how it handles emissions recalls so it's easier to force automakers to extend warranties for faulty emissions parts...
