* Freightliner takes parent's name

Portland,Ore,USA -Truckstop USA News -9 Oct 2007: -- What's in a name? A lot, according to Freightliner LLC. The largest North American truckmaker announced its corporate name will now be Daimler Trucks North America LLC... Freightliner LLC has been a part of Daimler AG or one of its predecessor companies since 1981...


* Sept. truck orders lower than expected
New York,NY,USA -Today's Trucking -8 Oct 2007 - Preliminary numbers for class 8 show 11,600 new orders in September -- down 29 percent year-to-year (vs. down 26% y/y in August), reports the transportation arm of New York market analysts Bear Stearns... Class 5-7 orders were juts below that mark -- 11,200, down 38 percent from the same period in 2006 (down 38% y/y in August). Arguably, says Bear Stearns, class 5-7 orders are a "purer" measure of economically derived demand, given that there was a smaller pre-buy in medium duty trucks in 2006... "But while we're optimistic about 2008-09, we acknowledge that investors may not revisit these names until sometime in the first part of 2008, given the lack of a near-term catalyst (orders or freight)"...


* International Truck negotiating with UAW on new agreement
Fort Wayne,IN,USA -The Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly (Kendallville, IN) -5 Oct 2007: -- Navistar, the world’s fourth-largest truckmaker, in June 2006 reached a tentative agreement with union leaders on a new contract. That agreement was rejected by members. The contract that just expired was in place for five years, longer than the company’s previous three- and four-year contracts with the UAW... Dan Ustian, Navistar’s chief executive officer, has said the company needs to trim costs by $6,000 per truck and $600 per engine by early 2009... The company’s North American truck and bus sales declined 38 percent through August, according to trade publication Automotive News... Sales for truckmakers have fallen because of a surge in buying in 2006 ahead of new pollution regulations that took effect Jan. 1...
