TRUCKERS' HEALTH * USA - Firm puts truck drivers on the road to fitness
They eat too much, don't exercise enough, sleep poorly and suffer from high blood pressure
San Jose,CA, USA -The San Jose Mercury News, by Patty Fisher -3 Sept 2007: -- ... As a group, commercial truck drivers are notoriously unhealthy, which increases the risk of traffic accidents and makes the roads more dangerous for the rest of us... So it did my heart good the other morning to watch a bunch of truck drivers who work for Con-way Freight in San Jose getting paid to run through a set of stretching exercises, check their body mass index and consult with their wellness coach before climbing into their cabs for the day's pickups and deliveries... (Photo by Gary Reyes/Mercury News - Eric Palmer rolls his neck during a stretching exercise class at Con-way Freight in San Jose on August 30, 2007. Con-way has hired a wellness coach to help drivers lose weight and improve their diet to combat the fact that truck drivers are among the least healthy employee groups in America)
* Keep on Trucking
Nashville,TN,USA -Business Tennessee, by Sara C. Shoemaker -September 2007: -- The health of the global economy could be riding on whether Professional Drivers Medical Depots gain traction... The Knoxville-based walk-in clinic opened in January, after years of research sponsored solely by PDMD chairman and CEO John McElligott, to provide a convenient and affordable health care option to the thousands of truckers driving without health insurance... There's a perfect storm brewing in the $90 billion trucking industry. Today's drivers live to an average age of 55, and 30 are found dead in their cabs each day, according to McElligott's findings (which are consistent with the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association). More than 80% of active drivers are over 40. "Most don't even know they have a problem until they come in here," he says. "[This is] the most underserved occupation in the history of medicine."
