McDonald’s plans to run its 155 UK delivery trucks on biodiesel made entirely from cooking oil collected from its restaurants by the end of the year...

London,UK -MarketWatch (CAL,USA), by Tom Bemis -Jul 2, 2007: -- Running a restaurant chain's trucks using recycled cooking oil is probably great for the environment... It's probably even great for public relations... But at first blush it does seem to carry an intuitive risk of, if you'll excuse the phrase, backfiring with customers... What's perhaps different now, is that this is a marketing tool, rather than a back-office ploy aimed at saving something on the cost side of the ledger... Indeed, it's not even entirely clear that doing this will save any money. But if it can be turned into positive PR, well, any lost savings are probably minimal anyway... And for a company that battles some fairly stiff griping over the healthiness of its menu offerings, making green statements can be important...
