* USA - Study: Biofuels are increasingly competitive
New York,NY,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -5 Feb 2007: -- A new study in the U.S. shows that alternative fuels are 29 percent more cost-competitive than they were three years ago when compared to their hydrocarbon counterparts.... The study, released by the Energy Management Institute, says the five commercially viable alternatives recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy showed big comparative gains... Biodiesel is 29.2 percent more cost-competitive than in was in 2004. Ethanol is 17.4 percent; Natural gas 41.4 percent; and propane 21.3 percent... The study was conducted by analyzing three years of pricing data collected from more than 80 urban areas across all 50 states... The data clearly demonstrates the continued and growing viability of domestic renewable fuels, concludes EMI...

* USA - Opinion: Analyst Says More Ethanol Won’t Stem Consumption
Atlanta,GA,USA -TTNews (Alexandria,Va) , by Tarun Reddy -5 Feb 2007: -- A leading energy analyst said President Bush’s plan to increase ethanol production would not reduce the country’s overall energy consumption or help the United States move away from oil as its main source of energy for transportation... “There are no alternatives to hydrocarbon-based energy in the foreseeable future,” Michael Economides, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Houston, said here last month during the annual winter meeting of the rate bureau SMC3... But Economides said there is not enough corn produced in the United States to dramatically increase the availability of ethanol, and if the country started importing corn, the resulting price increase would not make the plan economically feasible...

* USA - Ionia now running county trucks on biodiesel
Ionia County,Grand Rapids,MI,USA -The Grand Rapids Press, by Susie Fair -Feb 05, 2007: -- It may take a while to notice, but those county trucks clearing roads of snow also are making for clearer skies... The Ionia County Road Commission has made the switch to biodiesel, a blend of soybean oil and petroleum-based diesel, a product fast becoming Michigan's "earth friendly" alternative fuel... Ionia, along with road crews in Calhoun, Chippewa, Eaton, Jackson, Macomb and Mecosta counties have reaped the benefits of biodiesel by taking advantage of incentives of up to $10,000 each offered by the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee...
