* USA - Clean fuel technology takes stage as Bush speaks to nation
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -23 Jan 2007: --
The chorus of voices calling on automakers to put their environmental initiatives into high gear will grow even louder tonight when President Bush delivers his annual State of the Union address... Bush is expected to repeat his call for reforming fuel economy measures for passenger cars, which haven't been raised since 1985. He is also expected to call for more money for advanced battery research, needed to power fuel cells and other alternative powertrains, and raise the target for renewable fuel use to as much as 60 billion gallons of ethanol by 2030 -- up from 5 billion in 2006...

* USA - DCX diesel trucks will beat emissions deadline - Zetsche says, and critiques fuel standards
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -Jan 23, 2007: -- DaimlerChrysler AG chairman Dieter Zetsche confirmed Tuesday that the company will meet 2010 diesel emissions standards with its Dodge Ram heavy duty 2500/3500 pickup truck and will begin selling them in about a month... He also criticized the emphasis on existing standards, known as Corporate Average Fuel Economy, saying reforming the fuel economy system makes "far more sense than just picking a number out of the air" and said policymakers shouldn't favor hybrids over diesel and other clean technologies... But asked about global warming, he didn't equivocate: "It's a fact," and it must be dealt with, he said...

* USA - Getting Hydrogen Cars To Live Up to Their Hype
Washington,DC,USA -The Washington Post, by Sholnn Freeman -Jan 23, 2007: -- The Ford Edge gliding along the George Washington Memorial Parkway doesn't have spinning rims or a booming sound system. The bling in this SUV is the technology. The vehicle runs almost silently. It needs no gas and releases no polluting exhaust... The HySeries Edge, which is to be unveiled at the Washington Auto Show today, is a plug-in hybrid with an electric drive powered by a battery and a hydrogen fuel cell. Its arrival intensifies the competition to manufacture a mass-market electric hybrid that reduces reliance on gasoline and curbs the emission of greenhouse gases... But the futuristic Edge vehicle is Ford's only one, and it cost $2 million to build. To get a car like this into the showroom for sale to the public will require the automotive and energy industries to leap high technological hurdles. The infrastructure to deliver alternative fuels such as hydrogen is in its infancy, and engineers are puzzling over how to mass-produce a lightweight, inexpensive and safe electric battery...
