DRIVERS' SHORTAGE * Australia - Trucking industry defends plan to employ foreign drivers

Australia -ABC Online -Jan 14, 2007: -- The Northern Territory branch of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has rejected claims by the Transport Workers Union that employing foreign drivers would jeopardise safety... The ATA at the national level has a long-standing request in to the Federal Government to bring in drivers from overseas on special working visas to fill industry shortages... ATA Northern Territory executive officer Peter Goed says, employing foreign drivers it is not an immediate solution, but it will help address the skill shortage... The ATA is preparing a submission to a Senate transport industry inquiry that is looking at a range of solutions to the shortage problem...
