* USA - Economy pinches trucking industry
Memphis,TN,USA -commercialappeal.com (subscription), by Jane Roberts -Oct 15, 2006: -- The peak shipping season for truckers is building very slowly this year, a sign, analysts say, that retailers are still trying to gauge how much consumers will spend... "We typically see a seasonal pickup in freight demand in mid- to late August," said Chaz Jones, trucking industry analyst at Morgan Keegan. "We haven't seen it yet. And if we don't see demand in the next week or two, in my mind, we probably won't have much of a peak season this year."... The reality is hitting trucking companies in the pocket. While J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., the first in the sector to announce third-quarter earnings, Friday reported profits up 45 percent, revenue in its traditional trucking business was flat, and income was down 11 percent... Its biggest customer is Wal-Mart.... FedEx Corp. is holding comment on its peak outlook until the end of the month... But some analysts doubt the story is much different at FedEx, which carries its own less-than-truckload company...
